In an Op-Ed posted on the San Mateo Daily Journal website, Tran Tran shares how she got involved with her local government:
“I had the naive notion that government is there to serve the citizens. But, to be fair, how can they serve me when I haven’t done my part to provide input? So I began my civic engagement in mid-2013 and came to understand the factors that contributed to the lack of transparency, accountability and public engagement. And they have one outcome: distrust of government.”
Tran goes on to list a number of standards for community engagement in her home city of Boulder, CO:
1. Periscope allows live streaming of meeting to mobile devices
2. Poll Everywhere allows those watching remotely to participate in answering questions; and
2. Textizen allows participation by SMS.
